Focus on Forward bends - Pelvis Nutation
November 11, 2014
Today I talked to my class about NUTATION. (nothing to do with Ninja Turtles)
Nutation describes the movement of the pelvis in relation to the legs and the torso. Often the FLEXABILITY we seek in our forward bends comes not from the hamstrings, but the MOBILITY of the pelvis. Isolation the forward and backward tilt of the pelvis directly affects how short/long the hamstrings are. Most everyday folk are extremely fixed around the lumbar spine and pelvis and the only way to bend is to fold from the back and the legs. Years of inadequate posture will make this movement impossible without some neurogenic and musculoskeletal programming. In Yoga however we can feel that our centre of gravity - or core is not supported when we rely purely on hamstring flexibility. Thus the importance of MULA bandha and other “locks” become of paramount importance in attaining the yoga pose.
See Dr Longs advice on nutation and Uttanasana for more information and to practice these techniques book in for your personal yoga session with Jodie or come along to an Alignment or Siva class on a Tuesday.
